AN UNRECOGNISED MILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY

Voluntary organisations in the Northern Territory are lagging behind according to their own peak body.

Volunteering Territory claims there is hardly any recognition by the NT government of an industry which is valued at $183.5 million.

It is looking for respect and recognition for all the volunteers who give their time in the Northern Territory.

James Sadler is from Volunteering Territory Alice Springs,

"Volunteers are vital to the Northern Territory and I hope whatever the colour of the next administration, they will recognise the volunteers, voluntary organisations and their peak body with funding.

At present the NT government's provides no budget for Volunteering Territory and its record of supporting agencies that rely on volunteers is at best piecemeal and at worst insulting.

Volunteering Territory needs the government's support on issues such as the cost of training for volunteers, the rising cost of fuel for volunteers and the cost of police checks for volunteers.

It is especially difficult at this time for us to reach the volunteers and their organisations in the remote and regional areas of Northern Territory."

Welcome to new staff
Saturday, 01 November 2008

The Territory’s voluntary sector has a new advocate in James Sadler who has just joined the Darwin office of Volunteering Territory.

James is ready and willing to talk to Ministers and anyone who matters about raising the profile of volunteering and the voluntary sector in the Territory.

An experienced journalist and lobbyist in both Australia and the UK, he says he is looking forward to the challenge.

“I enjoyed the community advocacy I did in Britain in the last few years and I’m aiming to not only raise the profile of volunteering in the Northern Territory as a whole but also improve the recognition and respect for all voluntary organisations from the NT government. At present there is no minister responsible for volunteering, nor is there any regular funding for our industry.

I hope to address that as well as ensuring the voluntary sector is afforded the professional development it needs to best serve the needs of the community.”

James Sadler is the new Regional Development Officer for Volunteering Territory and comes to Darwin after working for six months in our Alice Springs office.
